Diabetic Retinopathy Checklist

High blood-sugar levels from diabetes can damage blood vessels in your retina, the layer of nerve tissue at the back of your eye. This damage is called Diabetic Retinopathy. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent vision loss, and it’s important to maintain control of your blood sugar if you have diabetes. For more information please click here.

Things that can be done to reduce the chances of Diabetic Retinopathy:

  • Monitor blood sugar levels daily whether it is at home, at a clinic or at the hospital.

  • Know your numbers! Keep records of measurements obtained when blood sugar is checked.

  • Take prescribed medication daily.

  • Visit your General Practitioner often to monitor blood sugar.

  • Get blood tests done regularly to keep a record.

  • Get your Hemoglobin A1c completed at least two times per year

  • Exercise daily and regularly.

  • Watch your food intake and monitor what you eat.

  • Sugar intake should be at a low minimum.

  • Get eyes checked annually once there is no Diabetic Retinopathy

  • Help each other by sharing the same glucose meter. TWO PERSONS SHOULD NOT USE THE SAME LANCETS AND STRIP WHEN MEASURING BLOOD SUGAR. SHARING NEEDLES IS NOT ADVISED.

Things to do if diagnosed with Diabetic Retinopathy:

  • Any sign(s) of Diabetic Retinopathy, visit an Ophthalmologist right away.

  • Remember, treatment options are available depending on the extent of damage caused by Diabetic Retinopathy. Ask your Ophthalmologist which treatment is best for you.

  • Do your research on the information you received from your Ophthalmologist.

  • Get regular checkups with your Ophthalmologist even after treatment is completed.

  • Regular checkups with General Practitioner should be done to help control blood sugar.

  • Watch your food intake and monitor what you eat.

  • Exercise daily and regularly.

  • Sugar intake should be at a low minimum.

  • Monitor blood sugar levels daily whether it is at home, at a clinic or at the hospital.

The eyes are the window to the soul. Controlling and monitoring your blood sugar will decrease the chances if Diabetic Retinopathy.

Diabetic Retinopathy depends on you. Treat your body right and your eyes will thank you later.
